About Crystal H. Smith and the beginnings of Saddle Smith Saddlery

I grew up in Palisades, Idaho and started riding horses from the day I was born...of course with my mom and dad. I started riding by myself when I was 3 years old. My grandfather started an outfitters and guide business 1962 and my parents took over in 1981.

In the summers, they take trail rides, overnight trips and fishing trips. In the fall, they take people hunting for big game animals.

I have had the privilege of living and riding in the mountains my whole life.

I started working with leather while I worked at Outfitters Pack Station in 2004. There, I started as a secretary and then started to learn to make headstalls, hobbles, breastcollars, saddle bags, etc.

In 2006, my dad took Kent Frecker on an elk hunt and I went a long. We started talking and I showed him a few things I had made. He asked me if I would like to come and work in his shop. I said yes!!! I worked at Freckers Saddlery for 4 years making tack and saddles. Kent is a very generous man. And he is so talented! His saddles and artwork are amazing. I hope that someday I can build a saddle as nice as his. He has showed me so much; if it wasn't for him, I would never be were I am today with my leather work. I really appreciate everything he has done for me.

David Rigby also helped me out a lot. He worked in a station right next to me at Freckers and answered any questions I had. He is very talented, and makes a beautiful and outstanding saddle.

I have a wonderful, handsome husband Jared and three beautiful daughters: Trinity 6, Cheznee 3, and Haylee 1. They are so supportive and helpful. Jared gave up his garage so that I can have a saddle shop.
